Albin Lee Meldau, the up-and-coming 27-year-old Swedish singer-songwriter, describes his newly released four-track EP as a “hopelessly romantic’s naïve love story”, and it’s sure to bring a rush of emotions to every listener.
Albin’s musical passion arose from a young age as he was born into a talented family, with his mother being none other than Annika Irene Blennerhed – one of the strongest female jazz voices. The EP is released by Mayfly Records and had the help of Björn Yttling (Lykke Li, Peter Bjorn & John, Shout Out Louds) and Justin Parker (Lana Del Rey, Bat for Lashes, BANKS). His captivating voice embodies the pure passion of unrequited love, and having been the lead singer of Magnolia, a band that won Best Soul Band in the Scandinavian Soul Awards 2014, a depth of soul travels throughout each of the tracks.
His unique, passionate voice has been commended as similar to Paolo Nutini, but slower in pace. The lead track Let Me Go provides a melody for the famous saying “if you love them, let them go”. Telling the tale of a troubled couple who share a fiery love, it is reminiscent of the tale of Icarus; if you fly too close to the sun, you will inevitably fall. Its soulful verses build slowly and lead into the upbeat, foot-tapping chorus that is sure stay with you throughout the day.
His debut single Lou Lou has achieved more than 6 million streams on Spotify and has made the viral list in Taiwan, Austria, Ireland, New Zealand and Germany, alongside hitting the #5 spot in Spotify’s Global Viral Chart. It is not hard to see why this powerful song has struck a chord with so many people worldwide, as it once again tells the sad tale of love. The repeated poignant chorus and hard-hitting verse, combined with the slow and deliberate chords are evocative of a lullaby; but a lullaby underpinned by the dark reality of adulthood.
His two new tracks Darling and Lovers also embody this aching desire, and can only be described as what feelings sound like. In this current day, it is quite rare to find new music with as much emotional input as found in each of the songs on the Lovers EP.
Music like this is best heard live as the emotion of the songs pulsates through the crowd.
