Troye Sivan’s first few singles have undoubtedly been popular. The melancholy edge within his music has attracted all sorts of attention from stars including Adele and Taylor Swift having conversations on Twitter, which mainly includes Taylor complementing Troye on his music. And I must admit… I’m a little obsessed too.
Troye had an interesting build up to the album; releasing a trilogy of songs alongside music videos that tell a story, known as the Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy. The music videos Wild, Fools, and Talk Me Down tell the story of Sivan having a close relationship with a boy in his childhood who he falls in love with as they grow up together despite the other boy’s father being somewhat problematic.
The sound of the album is a strange and intense one, soft synths seem to be one of most prominent sounds throughout the whole album, it comes across with a cool kind of elegance and Sivan’s vocals wrap it up in one neat package.
I found that this album is a bittersweet mixture of nostalgia and joy. He leaves you to interpret whether the song playing is happy or not and its alternative pop vibes radiate intrigue and interest with his simplistic, but effective vocals on each record. However, it’s not just the quality of the music that makes it special – he writes in a depth which seems effortless but is so personal and true that you can’t help but somehow relate it to yourself. You can see that he speaks from a place within him that’s so personal, it only feels right to listen with the same intensity and to pay your full attention to the song playing. Sivan’s songs are the kind that you want to blast on full volume simply because you can and because they’re really that good.
There are songs like Heaven that send a message with such beautiful brutality. The song features Betty Who and talks about when he was unsure if he would be able to go to heaven because of his sexuality, but eventually comes to the conclusion that he wasn’t allowed in heaven whether or not he really wanted it in the first place.
