Game review: Helldivers 2

In the vast cosmos of gaming, few titles manage to achieve the level of unity and camaraderie that Helldivers 2 effortlessly brings to the forefront. Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios in collaboration with PlayStation Studios, this sequel has set ablaze the gaming world, igniting a fervour among both PlayStation and PC gamers alike.

From the moment I embarked on my journey with Helldivers 2, it was evident that this game was designed to evoke the nostalgia of classic couch co-op gaming while seamlessly integrating the modern landscape of online multiplayer. The sense of camaraderie fostered by bringing players together across diverse platforms is a testament to the game’s ethos of unity and cooperation. At its core, Helldivers 2 presents players with a straightforward yet captivating premise: unite as a team of four to combat two formidable enemy factions, the Automatons and the Terminids.

The game wastes no time in immersing players in its chaotic yet exhilarating universe, reminiscent of the satirical charm of ‘Starship Troopers.’ Stepping into the boots of a Helldiver, players are tasked with safeguarding Super-Earth against relentless waves of enemies. Whether venturing solo, teaming up with friends, or diving into matchmaking across platforms, the cooperative elements shine brightly, amplifying the thrill of battle and forging unbreakable bonds between players. The training phase serves as a hilarious initiation, preparing players for the heart-pounding action that awaits.

Once aboard the home ship, selecting missions becomes a strategic endeavour, each choice leading to adrenaline-fueled ‘Helldives’ onto hostile planets, where survival hinges on teamwork and tactical prowess. One of Helldivers 2’s most endearing quirks is the constant presence of friendly fire, injecting moments of chaos and hilarity amidst the intense combat. Accidental misfires and explosions serve as catalysts for laughter, strengthening the camaraderie between players and fostering memorable experiences. Stratagems, essential support tools ranging from airstrikes to resupply drops, play a pivotal role in turning the tide of battle.

As difficulty escalates and pressure mounts, strategic utilisation of these tools becomes paramount, adding layers of depth to the gameplay experience. Arrowhead has ingeniously woven community engagement into the fabric of Helldivers 2, with a games master issuing ‘Major Orders’ to the Helldiver community, unlocking advancements and additional stratagems. The collaborative effort of the community, exemplified by missions such as liberating planets to unlock advanced technology, underscores the game’s emphasis on unity and teamwork. However, it’s not without its drawbacks. Some server issues and the necessity for a PlayStation sign-in for PC Players have marred an otherwise seamless experience.

Despite these hiccups, the game’s core brilliance shines through. In summary, Helldivers 2 transcends the boundaries of traditional gaming, delivering an electrifying experience that unites players across platforms in a shared pursuit of victory. Its seamless integration of cooperative gameplay mechanics, coupled with its infectious humour and relentless action, make it a must-play title for gamers of all stripes. So, grab your gear, rally your squad, and prepare to dive headfirst into the fray. For democracy, for liberty, for the thrill of Helldivers 2 awaits.

See you on the front lines, soldier!
