Product review: AKG N200 Wireless Headphones

AKG N200

Over the past few years there’s been a familiar name at the top of most headphone wish lists. That name? AKG.

Even after their acquisition by South Korean global phenomenon Samsung, they still haven’t missed a beat (no pun intended). What started out as a small Austrian electronics company has turned into a giant amongst the headphone world. Which brings me nicely onto what I have here today with the N200 wireless headphones.

Now to look at, they’re not exactly imposing. They’re small and lightweight but the build quality seems absolutely fantastic. AKG describe the casing as “exquisite” and I must say, it’s hard to disagree. The two ear buds are connected by a band that sits comfortably around the back of your neck and it’s hard to tell there is anything there. I must add that these cables are magnetic and avoid the tangling that becomes so frustrating. There’s also a 3 button remote control and microphone so you need not worry about having to fish your phone out of your pocket all the time. Once the headphones are in the ear canal, there’s a comfort to them which means I could happily wear them for quite a while. This is just what I might do as due to the 8-hour battery life, so I can listen for even the longest trips up north to see the relatives. Even if they run out of battery (as we all know what trains are like in this country), due to the speed charging facility, a simple 10-minute charge will give you an extra hour of battery life. Perfect.

With up to eight hours playback, there’s plenty of charge to keep the N200 wireless playing on the longest journeys.

The build is great, the battery life is more that you’ll need, there are four sizes of tips included for comfort, but what about the most important part? How do these “reference” headphones stack up against the competition? After a quick 10-minute charge, I’m already finding out. Like many of the other headphones that AKG have produced, there’s plenty to love here. The sound oozes from the tiny buds effortlessly and their “semi-closed” back design, really keeps the sound ticking along without a trouble in the world. I can throw anything from Blink-182 to Massive Attack at the N200 and it’s difficult to find faults. If you’re a bass head then maybe you’d need something of the on-ear variety but from an in-ear headphone, there’s more than enough to keep me interested. I can listen to these quite happily and there isn’t any discomfort. Even when my majestic dog thinks its playtime and I have to get up and run around, they don’t fall out of my ears and the sound just keeps going.

If you’re after a set of high quality in-ear wireless headphones then the N200 might just be the ones for you. If you fancy something a little bigger, give your local Richer Sounds a call and see what else we might have for you.
