The hugely popular Marantz PM6005 amplifier and matching CD6005 CD player have been given an upgrade and renamed the 6006 series. Let’s hope Marantz haven’t fixed what wasn’t broken…
The PM6006 is basically from the same family as its predecessor but with a few little upgrades which Marantz promise will enhance your listening experience. Coming in at 45 Watts per channel at 8ohms the PM6006 is more than comfortable powering a set of much larger speakers, (thanks to a large toroidal transformer). As far as inputs go Marantz have added a second digital optical input to the single one on the 6005; hardly groundbreaking, but could be very useful! There are also 5 line inputs and a moving magnet phono input, if you feel like digging out that old turntable and really pushing the PM6006’s limits.

Marantz have also given their award-winning CD player a kick in the right direction as well, (not that much was wrong with it in the first place). Marantz promise “even more specially selected components” with the CD6006, which no matter how much research I did I couldn’t find out exactly what they were, so we’re going to have to trust them with this one… There’s also a CS4398 DAC, which converts your digital signals to analogue. The CD player can all be controlled through a new remote, which will also control the PM6006 amp.
Marantz has also upgraded the feet of the CD player, which in-turn improves the overall stability and eliminates any vibration. As any hi-fi fan will tell you, this is vital to a good sounding CD player, so kudos to them. It’s an issue that has probably been overlooked by many reviews of its younger brother, the CD6005.
So, in summary, there has been no compromise in the creation of the new 6006 series hi-fi separates. Both units still offer that incredibly well organised and full, flawless Marantz sound that we have grown to love. If these new changes tick the boxes you’re looking for then this may well be the hi-fi for you.

Just purchased the cd6005 which sounds great but has an intermittent drawer fault. Wish I’d bought the 6006 now…
