RPG’s (Role Playing Games) are one of the most debated genres of gaming by its fans and developers; as such I will not attempt to truly rank the best of all time, but select the five new and old worth enjoying if you haven’t yet.
1. Morrowind
Expansive and surprising, this game can still hold its own even today. Across its huge map full of geographic variety and wonders, there are countless different characters, fauna and flora to captivate. The quests are lovingly scripted and usually with game-changing consequences. The lore and society all has its place and you cannot help but lose yourself in it. Like a good wine, it has only gotten better with age; after years in the hands of the creative mod-makers, the world is bigger and better than ever before.
2. Witcher 3
Following on from its highly acclaimed forbearers, the series has reached new heights. The characters lives are again at your mercy, you must carefully consider your every decision from the first moment. Colourful and dark at the same time, the land, its people and history are a constant marvel. Trudging through puddles as you explore new lands and adventures, there is always a challenge or marvel around every corner. The addition of the card game ‘Gwent‘ adds another dimension to your play and never fails to entertain.
3. Fallout 4
Beautiful in its bleakness, the fourth of its name has finally fulfilled its destiny. With modern graphics and processing, Fallout is now the game it always wanted to be. Waiting for your actions to mould their rise and fall, factions are at the mercy of your whim. There are baddies and beasties aplenty should you tire of politics, and companions of all shapes and sizes to accompany you along the way. After you are done adventuring there is always the new ability to craft your own home sweet home and stash all that hard won junk. All told, the game is as deep emotionally as it is vertically and horizontally.
4. Sea Dogs
Created in the year 2000, this charming adventure on the high seas by Akella Studios should be known to all, but sadly this gem never reached its full potential. Set on a giant free roam sea map, your character has the ability to choose a variety of allegiances and paths. As you progress on the high seas you develop your crew and fleet into a force to be reckoned with. The environmental detail is fantastic for its time, and the combat mechanics for sea warfare are skillful and engaging. It’s easy to see that this game was made on a small budget with thoughtfulness and love, which makes it all the more special.
5. Skyrim
Apologies for the obvious choice given its huge popularity, but for those who missed out, it is definitely worth taking a trip into the Viking inspired land of the dragons. Beautifully rugged and huge to explore, Skyrim almost has you hoping, nay, believing these lands once existed. Your first person interaction with the nature and people of the Nordic lands is really where the magic of the game comes from. Slaying and riding dragons, mining ore, raising the dead, becoming a vampire or werewolf and fighting your way literally to the gates of Valhalla. There is little not to like… apart from an arrow to the knee.
