Optoma are a name synonymous with high-end projectors, and have been for a long time. It’s this attention to detail, crossed with an ability to make great value for money products, that got me excited when I heard about its NuForce range of headphones and audio products. But can its BE6 wireless in-ear headphones compete against the rest of the options on the market?…
The first thing I noticed was the build quality. They are solid, yet not heavy. They seem to be a perfect balance between design and practicality. For a wireless set of headphones, they pretty much do exactly what you’d want of them – aptX Bluetooth connectivity to get the very best out of your music, robust and splash proof design, with a 30m range and 6 hours of playback & hands-free calls (using the in-built microphone).
Charging is straightforward thanks to the mini-USB charging port – the same type most mobiles and tablets use. Once fully charged, just pair up with your smartphone, tablet or computer and you have wireless music. It was so easy.
The sound quality is detailed and clear. I tested using a combination of Radiohead’s Kid A and César Franck’s Piano Quintet in F Minor. The electronic samples on Radiohead’s album were clean, yet had enough rhythmic drive to make the music sound as exciting as ever. The classical strings of Franck’s were dynamic and the crescendos in Molto moderato, quasi lento – Allegro were as bold and beautiful as ever. This is thanks to the high-grade titanium, magnesium and inert metal that is used to construct the headphone’s patented 10mm drivers.
Included in the pack are a complimentary pair of Comply Sport ear-plugs. Those unfamiliar with Comply will have to bear with me here… The company create tinny little “bungs” to fit in-ear headphones that vastly improve the sound quality. I was as sceptical as anyone when I first read this a couple of years ago – until I tried a pair for myself. The science behind them is quite straightforward. The plugs are comprised of a breathable material that actually moulds and expands under body temperature to fit the ear canal perfectly. This results in headphones that are less likely to fall out, are more comfortable and also block out up to twice as much external noise as traditional plugs. Therefore the music doesn’t have to be as loud, and you can hear more of the subtleties of the music.
The BE6s are also bundled with a varied set of plugs that are designed to fit a wide selection of ear sizes, and a novel rubber type that make wearing the NuForce BE6s far more secure. They also come with a very rugged and hardwearing carry case. Ideal for keeping them at their best for as long as possible. These really are a great choice if you’re wanting to go wire-free at home, work or on the move.
