Pioneer VSX924

So here we have it – the newest in Pioneer’s range of home cinema amplifiers, the VSX-924. Having been very impressed with their previous models I’m looking forward to getting stuck in with their latest offering.

What have they changed?

This year specification may appear fairly similar; although they have added a few sneaky extras along the way. Most notable is the addition of aptX Bluetooth and HTC connect, which brings high quality wireless music playback to both Apple and Android devices.

There are 7 HDMI’s inputs, compared to the 8 inputs last year, however they’ve kept the 2 HDMI outputs – perfect for connecting up both your TV and projector. Pioneer have also added a couple of extra composite sockets to make up for the loss. We like the inclusion of DTS Neo X decoding, allowing an incredibly realistic 3D sound, delivering 7.2 at 105 watts per channel.

We are pleased to see the VSX-924 can still upscale to 4K resolution, and now includes HDMI 2.0 so you can watch 4K Ultra HD content at a full 60fps.

The VSX-924 have stuck with the the same ‘Direct Energy’ amplifier to power the sound. Direct Energy is what Pioneer name their rather inventive circuitry, where all the signal paths are shortened to improve the quality of dynamics. On top of this there’s an ESS Digital to Analog Converter that makes this amp an absolute steal. When paired with the Texas Instruments Digital Sounds Processor, it can impressively playback high resolution audio files up to 24bit/192kHz.

What does it sound like?

I felt the sound had slightly more emphasis on the bass, which for me is a good thing. For those of you who don’t enjoy shaking the windows we would recommend having a listen with a variety of speakers to get the perfect sound match. The compatibility with high resolution audio means if music is a priority it would be well worth auditioning this system. Connecting this system with a similarly adept sub/satellite speaker package will give you a very natural, involving experience.

What’s the verdict?

Having sat down and had an extensive play with the home cinema amplifier, my overall opinion is that Pioneer have done a great job at improving the previous version. The VSX-924 seems quick and smooth; switching between inputs is fluid and browsing the settings menu has become a lot less frustrating. This is indeed a very pleasant amp to use.

Not just feature packed but pleasing on the ear too, we think this home cinema amplifier ticks all the right boxes. Don’t just take our word for it – call down to your local Richer Sounds and speak to one of our experts for an audition today.
