Film review: Despicable Me 3

This is animation at its best from the film studio Illumination and after a disappointing spinoff film “The Minions”, Despicable Me is back! On the back of the success of the first two films comes this sequel.

I am overjoyed to say Despicable Me 3 has the same fun, laughs and entertaining element for both kids and adults alike. When I heard that Despicable Me 3 was being made I hoped they would still keep it fun and entertaining to watch and the big kid in me would come out yet again. I have always been a fan of the films ever since watching the first film in the series and felt disappointed by “The Minions” spin off movie. But this film is back to what they do best and offers a family oriented film that produces fast lines, great animation and a bond with the on screen characters voiced by some of the best actors today.

Straight from the off, the film starts with the same laughs, smiles and charm that these movies always bring. The film starts with its main villain Balthazar Bratt (voiced by Trey Parker) an 80’s obsessed villain out for vengeance because his 80’s kid’s TV show got cancelled because he grew up too quick! So he sets out to steal the world’s biggest diamond from a ship under lots of security. Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) and Lisa (voiced by Kristen Wiig) attempt to thwart Bratt’s evil plans but unfortunately they fail and Bratt gets away with the Diamond. Back at HQ Gru and Lisa end up getting terminated from their employment. Jobless and not fighting crime the Minions want Gru to turn back into the villain he once was but Gru refuses. Gru finds out that he has a Twin brother Dru and meets up with him for the first time since birth and a bonding session transpires. Dru always wanted to be the villain Gru was and also like their father. Gru agrees to go on a mission to find Bratt and get back the diamond that he stole. There are twists and turns throughout the movie and this is thoroughly entertaining at every point.

There are cute elements in the film, one of which is Lisa wanting to become a mum to all three girls. The girls being adopted by Gru in the first film allows another side of Lisa to be explored and shows that all she wants to do is be a good mum and be there for her children no matter what. This is something I’m sure all parents can relate to watching this film. Julie Andrews has a cameo and voices Dru’s mother in the film which is absolutely priceless and backed up with an 80’s soundtrack throughout you can’t help but tap your foot along to the music. What more could you ask for?

Despicable Me 3 is an entertaining film with witty writing, a good plot and a villain who you won’t forget for a long time, a few lines don’t land well for the younger audience. The 80’s references throughout the film will go over the heads of the kids but for the adults they will not be able to stop laughing. The film is well scripted and in the audience there was plenty of laugher from children and adults and though it may not be as fantastic as the first movie in the series, it most certainly was better than the second film. This film hits a home run and is back to its best, overall a sweet film and a must see for the whole family.
