2015 saw a resurgent Sony standing tall and proud amongst their competitors. After a few quieter years, the brand, which still remains one of the world’s most respected electronics manufacturers, made some truly world-class equipment, receiving many well-earned plaudits along the way.

Such a strong showing bodes well for 2016, too. With new models of televisions, soundbars and home cinema equipment arriving imminently, it’s time to take a look at what Sony have in store for us this year. First up is a new Smart Blu-ray disc player: the BDPS3700.

Whilst it IS a new model for this year, the BDPS3700 uses the same casework as its predecessor. Rather than being a lazy design decision by Sony, another outing for their ‘Monolithic’ casework is a sensible choice. The half-size unit looks fantastic, with its simple yet elegant clean lines really catching the eye.

That beauty is more than skin-deep, however. Sony’s inclusion of their ‘Triluminous Colour’ engine, also used in their TV sets, gives tricky colour shades even more realism and depth than before. This is exclusive to Sony products, and their engineering know-how is put to good work here.

Elsewhere, the BDPS3700 keeps the key feature count high, starting with built-in wi-fi. Sony has opted for a slightly unusual design for the wi-fi antenna, but one that should give the best possible connection to even a weaker home wi-fi connection. If wi-fi connectivity in your home isn’t as strong as you’d like, but using an ethernet cable isn’t practical, this Sony might be the model to look at.

Of course, the wi-fi is there to accommodate the BDPS3700′s range of Smart features and network streaming capabilities. A whole host of popular streaming services such as Youtube, BBC iPlayer and many more are available through this Sony. DLNA streaming across a home network is also catered for, making playback of music, movies and images in the home easier than ever before.

Sony’s ‘TV SideView’ app is also compatible with the BDPS3700. The app, available for Android and Apple devices, allows your mobile phone or tablet to control the player. Most impressively of all, the app allows users to view information on the content being played in real-time, as well as being able to view relevant tweets and also accessing similar content through Sony’s own ‘Sony Entertainment Network’.

All told, Sony look to be off to a flyer again this year, and we’ve got plenty more to come from them yet!
