Product review: Tannoy Mercury 7.1 speakers

Legendary speaker manufacturer Tannoy is back with a compact bookshelf speaker that’s ideal for smaller rooms, desktop systems or even as satellite speakers in a surround sound system.

Well it must be Christmas, because we don’t see many new products from Tannoy so it’s a refreshing sight to see a new set in the store! Tannoy have recently released a new compact speaker series, the Mercury 7.1. A discrete bookshelf alternative for use as a stereo pair or to be used as part of a bigger surround sound system, they easily manage to hold their own as a stereo pair, and why wouldn’t they? Its very, very rare that the good folks at Tannoy create anything less than brilliant.

The Mercury 7.1 speakers use world-class Tannoy power handling, with an incredibly high efficiency to really give the best possible sound from even the smallest amplifiers. I had these running with a little Denon DM41, and I was blown away at the ease of which they were driven. For such a small little unit I was stunned with the grunt and detail these speakers had to offer. With a very warm sound overall, the speakers took all of my usual bass heavy tracks in their stride, but managed to tighten up wonderfully when playing through some more acoustically inclined music.

The crossovers in these are very impressive for the price point. The highs and lows gelled perfectly without leaving any horrible stutters behind when transitioning from one frequency to another. They boast a solid wood heavy weight cabinet with a premium silver finish around the brand new drivers and energy absorbing rubber feet to avoid any vibrations (of which there is none during my tests). Whilst the finish is a little rough to the touch unlike some lacquer coated models, the build is solid and very sturdy, which may require some slightly more substantial speaker stands or hefty wall mounts. The speakers are available in black, walnut and light oak finishes, meaning there is an option for every type of home decor.

Overall the Mercury 7.1 speakers sound very impressive, and offer a very clear and confident mid-range sound with fantastic low end reproduction, while not asking too much of smaller amplifiers. If you’re on a budget and  looking for a decent stereo speaker, then you should give these some serious consideration. Why not call or pop in to your local Richer Sounds to arrange a full demonstration today?

  1. Hi. I’m looking to setup a surround sound system from my current stereo setup. I have a brand new Sony STR DN1080 AV RECEIVER and a pair of Wharfdale Diamond 9.1s. What would be a good choice of centre speaker and should I use the 9.1s as satellites or front L and R? I’d like to get if not too expensive Dolby Atmos pair of speakers but am not sure which ones or what other speakers work well with my av or don’t. I’d considered some LX2s. Diamond 220s. I wanted the wharfdale sub but only because I’d like a downfiring ones for easier placement.

do you have any advice? I’ve even looking also at the monitor audio bronze 2 centre speaker. a q açpustics one. and I’ve seen wharfdale as well. is it better to stick to all wharfdale speakers and subs? do they sound better together than mixed with others? I was just looking at then new Tannoy 7.1s.. but have now clue what to go for.
