Most anticipated films of 2016 – Part One

films1

Before I launch into my top picks for upcoming blockbusters I should probably point out that I am a man of simple interests, I like it when things explode, I like when someone says “Get to the Chopper” and I especially like it when the President has to fight an army of lava men armed only with this faithful Bazooka ‘Old Glory’ – then again I think most people would like that! So perhaps it’s more fitting that I present The most anticipated Films of 2016 that are all probably going to be action films but maybe not all of them…

– Due March 25th from Warner Bros

Not too much can be said about this film that hasn’t been said already. Since the original announcement it’s drawn heat for some of its choices of cast members (Ben Affleck raising more than a few eyebrows as Batman), but the gripping trailers have fuelled the flames of excitement, as has Christopher Nolan’s involvement and the fact it will be loosely based on Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.

– Due July 15th from Columbia Pictures

The first Ghostbusters is a classic, the second Ghostbusters is okay but nothing compares to the original… right? The third Ghostbusters film looks to reboot the series with some heavy hitters in comedic talent as well as a complete gender swap for the cast. Starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy this new addition is a welcome change to the original formula.

Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-2‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’
– Due June 3rd from Paramount Pictures

Now bear with me on this one – I am not happy that I’m excited about this, but as a lifelong Radical Party Turtle there’s no way that I am going to miss a TMNT film that includes my favourite baddies, Rocksteady and Bebop. I may be a fool for including this but the heart wants what the heart wants. Expect shell-based wordplay, crazy ninja actions and of course plenty of pizza!

Deadpool’
– Due February 16th from 20th Century Fox

Finally the fourth wall breaking Deadpool gets his own film! Forget his appearance in X-men Origins because that was terrible and rejoice that this film is finally being made. Based around the classic Marvel comic of the same name, the film should be an incoherent tale of an assassin with regenerative abilities doing things that you can only do in an 18 rated film. For fans of the Marvel series it’s a no brainer… and if you watch it at the cinema you can leave the kids at home.

suicide-squad-2016-task-force-x-movie-characters‘Suicide Squad’
– Due August 5th from Warner Bros

From Marvel to DC we go with another comic book film but this time based on the lesser known ‘Suicide Squad’. They’re a group of expendable villains put to work for the good guys with no choice in the matter. Mainly gaining notice because of its tie in value to the new DC universe films and because of Jared Leto playing the joker, the first time he’s been on screen since Heath Ledger’s amazing rendition in The Dark Knight. If the trailer is anything to go by he’s not so much taken the reigns as he has painted an entirely different character of his own.

So that’s part one taken care of, in part two we take a look at another crop of highlights for this year’s movie releases. While you wait a couple of honourable mentions that are already out include The Revenant (here’s our review) and The Hateful Eight (here’s our review). We’ll be back soon with Part 2.
