Product review: Sony UBPX700 UHD Blu-ray player

Sony’s latest 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player supports Dolby Vision to deliver a truly cinematic experience.

Just over a year down the line since the release of the first 4K Blu-ray player and we’ve all but forgotten the excitement. It’s hard to even think of them as new technology now, but the good news is that as this happens, less expensive models are released, which is great for the majority of the consumers. But what about those who are a little more serious about AV and home cinema, and that still want the absolute best in image and sound?

Well fear not, they have not been forgotten about! Manufacturers like Sony are still churning out award winning products and pushing the limits of technology.

Just over a year ago, the Sony UBPX800 was released and it went down a treat, winning multiple awards and pleasing everyone who came in contact with one. Technology has this habit of improving and changing each year, and this time around Sony have introduced us to the UBPX700, Sony’s first-ever 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player that features Dolby Vision compatibility! In a nutshell, Dolby Vision is a format of media above HDR (High Dynamic Range)/HDR10 and sits on its golden throne as one of the highest possible formats of video media available to the mass market. The technology works by scanning each frame of a movie adjusting it accordingly to offer the absolute best image to the viewer, offering unrivalled levels of detail and clarity. For big screen sizes and technology like OLED and QLED, the difference in picture quality is stunning.

The x700 is beautiful, looks incredible, and for a smaller unit it’s incredibly quick, with zero ghosting on faster moving images. The player takes it all in its stride and is whisper quiet, unlike some of its rivals. On top of all that, it’s very straight forward to use. A quick glance will see it’s a different shape completely to the previous UBPX800, and that isn’t an accident. Sony have recently released the new STRDH790 AV receiver and the pair go together as well as gin and tonic, great news for those of you who enjoy an aesthetically pleasing cinema system. Each unit is design to compliment one another and both feature HDR10, Dolby Vision support as well as HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), with both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio formats offering you an incredibly immersive cinema experience in your own home.
