With such an abundance of new TV tech, there’s never been a better time to trade up. But what kind of tech is best for you?
RGB Mini LED
To understand RGB Mini LED TVs here’s a quick flatscreen TV history recap. The first flatscreen TVs used LCD (Liquid Crystal Displays) with colour filters and electrically-charged crystals that ‘twisted’ to display the image. Backlighting was initially by fluorescent lamp and then later LEDs. The next stage was to make the LEDs smaller, with increased numbers of dimming zones, which takes us to Mini LED.
What is RGB Mini LED?
RGB Mini LED is the next step and uses separate Red, Green and Blue LEDs as its light source. Unlike traditional LED TVs that rely on white and blue backlights and colour filters, RGB LED systems generate pure red, green and blue light directly, allowing the TV to produce a wider range of colours with greater precision and brightness.
What’s in a name?
Although widely supported within the TV industry, each manufacturer has its own take, with subtle tweaks to how the tech works. Sony refer to their version as True RGB, while Samsung call it Micro RGB. With LG it’s Micro RGB evo. Hisense, TCL and Philips thankfully all stick to RGB Mini LED – phew!
What’s SQD Mini LED?
Developed by TCL, SQD (Super Quantum Dot) Mini LED rivals RGB Mini LED for colour brilliance and accuracy but goes about it in a different way. It uses conventional Mini LEDs for backlighting, but with Micro-Lens Technology for enhanced focus and reduced light bloom. In addition to this, a Super Quantum Dot layer replaces traditional colour filters, giving you a wider colour spectrum and ultra-pure whites.
What about OLED?
Although OLED TVs have been around for as long as the iPhone, just like that staple of mobile telephony, there’s been a constant evolution of tech. Top of the tech tree right now is LG’s Primary RGB Tandem 2.0 panel. It generates light by independently stacking the three primary colours (red, green and blue). This maximises the lighting efficiency, meaning that it’s much brighter than previous OLED displays, but still with the deep blacks and infinite contrast that’s made OLED a fan favourite.
Of course, there are other great TV technologies available, if you’re still unsure what to go for, why not visit your local Richer Sounds store, or call our Telesales team now to discuss what may be best for you.
