Tech advice: Screen Wipes for your AV Equipment

If you’ve ever reached for a packet of screen wipes to give your TV a quick clean, you’re certainly not alone. For years, these products have been marketed as a convenient, “safe” solution for keeping screens spotless. However, they can pose risks, particularly to modern televisions and high-end AV equipment.

In fact, we’ve taken the step of no longer selling screen wipes at all. That might sound surprising, especially given how popular they are, but it’s a decision based on what we’ve seen first-hand: damaged screen coatings, streaking that won’t shift, and in some cases, permanent marking that requires a costly panel replacement. None of that aligns with how we believe customers should be looking after their AV kit.

The issue lies in what many of these wipes actually contain. While they’re often labelled as “gentle” or “safe for screens,” the reality is that even mild cleaning agents can react badly with the delicate coatings used on modern displays. Anti-glare layers, OLED panels, and nano-coatings are all far more sensitive than the glass screens of years gone by. Add to that the fact that wipes are, by design, wet, and it becomes very easy to apply more moisture than intended, especially around edges where it can seep into the panel or internal components.

We’re particularly wary of the growing number of low-cost cleaning products available online. It’s incredibly easy to pick up a bulk pack of wipes at a bargain price, but there’s very little transparency about what’s actually in them. Inconsistent formulations, overly harsh chemicals, or simply poor-quality materials can all contribute to damage over time. What might seem like a small saving upfront can quickly turn into an expensive mistake.

So, what should you be using instead?

In most cases, the safest and most effective method is also the simplest: a clean, soft microfibre cloth, used dry or just very slightly dampened with water. Not wet, just barely moist. This is usually more than enough to lift dust, fingerprints, and everyday marks without risking harm to the screen. The key is to be gentle, avoid pressure, and never spray liquid directly onto the display. It’s not the most glamorous advice, and it doesn’t come in flashy packaging—but it works. More importantly, it helps preserve the integrity of your equipment for the long term.

We know it can be tempting to trust products that are marketed specifically for the job, but when it comes to modern AV gear, less really is more. If there’s one takeaway we’d like customers to have, it’s this: you don’t need strong chemicals or saturated wipes to keep your screen clean. A careful approach with the right cloth will do the job perfectly well, and keep your investment safe in the process.
